The Bible teaches the local church is led by elders (Titus 1:5; 1 Peter 5:1-2; Acts 14:23). Elders are men who are biblically-qualified (1 Timothy 3:2-7; Titus 1:6-9) and who aspire to the task (1 Timothy 3:1). They joyfully shepherd God’s flock and act as role models for the church (1 Peter 5:1-4). Elders are not men who are perfect or “have arrived,” rather they model how sinners daily go to the cross in repentance and find forgiveness. They display the truth that walking in the light with Christ involves going to Christ, our advocate (1 John 1:5-2:2).
